Developer to partner with Canopy by Hilton on Portland hotel project

Fathom Cos. by Jim Brady will team up with Canopy by Hilton on a new Portland waterfront hotel slated to open in spring 2021, the companies said Wednesday.

“I was looking for a number of different franchise brands for this property,” Brady told Mainebiz by phone Wednesday from Bethesda, Md. “I was more focused on finding what would work best for our market.”

While he didn’t say what the others took into consideration, Brady said the team ultimately went with Canopy by Hilton in part because it was very neighborhood-oriented, arts-related and to the local food and culture scene – which they said was “” a good fit for the Portland market.

Brady, who said he has visited most of the Canopy by Hilton hotels open in the United States, is also impressed with the energy behind the brand, saying: “They seem to have good traction in the most prestigious markets in the United States. great locations “.

In Portland, the waterfront hotel project will be located at the corner of Center and Commercial streets and will feature the city’s first indoor-outdoor rooftop bar and restaurant overlooking Casco Bay.

Wednesday’s announcement comes less than three months after Brady briefed Mainebiz about negotiations on a possible franchise deal.

Brady is President of Fathom Cos., A hotel management and property development company focused on historic renovations and repositioning of hotels, offices, residential and mixed-use properties.

Fathom Cos. is in the process of being approved with the city, with a public hearing scheduled before the Historic Preservation Board next month, according to Brady. He said approvals are expected this spring, putting the project on track to start in the fall and open by spring 2021 as planned.

Canopy by Hilton is the lifestyle brand of Hilton (NYSE: HLT), a 17-brand hospitality giant with more than 5,500 properties in its portfolio, located in 109 countries and territories.

Gary Steffen, global director of Canopy by Hilton, said in Wednesday’s press release that the company was “positively thrilled” to showcase the brand in the historic Old Port district.
