Huge queues are expected after roadworks next to Portland Beach Road

A TRAFFIC warning was issued this morning for motorists traveling to and from Portland.

Dorset Council said delays were likely and motorists should “allow more time for journeys” after road works begin near the abandoned Ferrybridge Inn site off Portland Road.

The resulting temporary traffic lights slow down traffic on the A354 Portland Road in both directions around Whitehead Drive.

There is reports this morning that traffic around 8 a.m. was returning to Fortuneswell as motorists headed north.

The A354 Beach Road is Portland’s only off-shore access route for motorists.

Yesterday afternoon and evening, long lines were seen from Portland heading north along Beach Road and from Weymouth heading south on Buxton Road, Chickerell Road, as well as the vicinity of Wyke Regis.

An update from Travel Dorset read: “We are sorry to report that very long delays and disruption are likely this evening due to urgent Wessex Water works on Portland Beach Road at Ferry Bridge.

“Temporary lights are used with extended working hours to speed up the work.

“Please allow extra time for trips on Portland Beach Road this morning as an emergency

“Work on Wessex Water continues near Ferry Bridge.

“Very long delays are likely.”

Wessex Water has been contacted for a statement.
