OHSU Campaign for Healthy Eating in Portland Restaurants

Throughout the month of February, local restaurants partner with OHSU to encourage heart-healthy eating.

PORTLAND, Oregon – In partnership with the Knight Cardiovascular Institute at Oregon Health & Science University, 10 local restaurants are participating in the “Eat Your Heart Out!” »Dining event.

Organizers hope to educate people about heart-healthy food choices in restaurants and show that delicious food can be healthy.

The culinary event takes place throughout February, which is American Heart Month.

Magna Restaurant in Southeast Portland is one of the participating restaurants.

“We make a traditional Filipino dish called Lumpiang Sariwa, which is a fresh-style Lumpiang,” Chef Carlo Lamagna said. “Filipino food is famous for being very heavy, very rich and centered on meat, especially pork. But here in the restaurant we are kind of trying to move forward.

Lamagna, along with other chefs, strives to offer menu options with less sodium and saturated fat.

“It’s important because too much sodium in the diet increases blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Too much saturated fat raises cholesterol, which is a risk factor for heart attack, ”said Tracy Severson, dietitian for OHSU.

Severson said many of his customers learn to cook healthy meals at home, but it can be difficult to choose healthy options from a restaurant menu.

“It’s really important that we all pay attention and try to eat better. Ninety percent of Americans eat too much salt each day, and about 75 percent eat too much saturated fat. So there is definitely room for improvement for all of us, ”Severson said.

She recommends avoiding fad diets and focusing on staples: fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and vegetable protein or fish.

Chef Lamagna encourages people to ask for heart-healthy meals when dining out.

“There are a lot of options and I think a lot of restaurants are more careful and aware of what they’re adding to their food. So yeah, just read the menu, do a little homework and you’ll be fine. You can have fun! ”Said Lamagna.

All participating restaurants offer dishes that meet the nutritional requirements of the American Heart Association’s Heart-Check Recipe Certification Program.

The dishes offered include:

• Vegetable noodles with pad thai almond butter sauce (at Prasad)

• a gluten-free Pomodoro pizza (at the Deno pizzeria)

• Salted Filipino vegetable pancake (at Magna)

• Mediterranean chicken with hummus, salsa, tabbouleh and tahini (at the Tucci restaurant)
