12 new Portland restaurants we can’t wait to try this fall and winter (even if some don’t open until spring)

In August, as Eem co-owners Earl Ninsom and Eric Nelson outlined their plans for Phuket Cafe, a new all-day restaurant in northwest Portland, Nelson let slip that he was also working on a second project: a margarita from North Portland. bar collaboration with MidCity SmashBurger.

Target opening for both? November.

It was an illustrative moment for two reasons.

First, after a quiet year and a half on the Portland restaurant front, it looked like fall would finally bring some exciting new restaurants.

And second, because when I reached out to Nelson to check on progress this week, the Phuket Cafe opening had been delayed and MidCity SmashBurger wasn’t coming to St. Johns after all. (The space could become a permanent home for cocktail pop-up Nelson’s Shipwreck).

With that in mind, and with the caveat that most new restaurants face long construction and permitting delays, here are a dozen new and upcoming restaurants we look forward to trying this fall and winter, although some of them don’t open until spring.

Banh Mi Boys

This Louisiana-born restaurant, which mixes classic New Orleans po’boys and Vietnamese banh mi, will open a restaurant in Portland this winter, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported last month. The franchise’s next location will occupy the space of the strip mall that previously housed the original Doe Donuts, which moved to Northeast Sandy Boulevard last year.

Bastion

Walked by this new Sellwood-Moreland restaurant on a tip last week and found a lovely and surprisingly busy gluten-free deli with salads, sandwiches, cookies, donuts, brunch items, breads, beer and more. The cafe, from nutritionist Marne Minard (Joule), with help from former Holiday baker Caitlyn Tuttle, comes after a year that saw many gluten-free and paleo-friendly restaurants in Portland close.

Berlu Bakery (and noodle cafe)

Chef Vince Nguyen has been serving impeccable Vietnamese pastries from the doorstep of his Southeast Portland restaurant for over a year now. But for the first time on Sunday, Berlu Bakery will offer an on-site catering service, with a pair of noodle soups – one with duck, the other with mushrooms – joining a simplified menu of pandan waffles, cakes with mango, Vietnamese coffee and more.

Target date: Sunday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bluto’s

After launching two successful Portland chains in Lardo and Grassa, chef Rick Gencarelli said he was “excited” to be back in a small kitchen. At the Greek-inspired Bluto’s, Gencarelli and his team plan to serve souvlaki, the kebab-like grilled meats cooked here over an open hearth, along with fresh Greek salads, Chicago-style flambé saganaki cheese and dipped soft Greek yogurt. in a quick-drying tahini shell.

Shaat Wallah

DesiPDX cart owner Deepak Saxena, working on a new sandwich concept, Chaat Wallah, where his pulled pork masala and ground lamb will be stacked in Dos Hermanos toast, was the first to report Eater PDX. According to Saxena, a first Chaat Wallah will open alongside canned cocktail company 503 Distilling in the Iron Fireman Collective building, while a second in the former Horn of Africa space northeast of Portland will be launched early next year as a commissary kitchen and take-out operation.

Jojo

Loaded jojos and fried chicken sandwiches from the Jojo food truck. The cart hopes to open a brick-and-mortar restaurant in the Pearl District by the end of the year.Mark Graves

Jojo

Portland’s famous fried chicken sandwich and burger smash cart is putting the finishing touches on its first brick-and-mortar restaurant in the Pearl District’s former Daily Cafe space. The new Jojo will build on the cart’s familiar menu, adding cocktails, milkshakes, vegan burgers and a fried Ota Tofu sandwich, plus a bonus not available to most carts – year-round covered seating. Permit issues have already pushed back Jojo’s planned summer opening.

Morchelle

This wild and fodder new restaurant in the former Verdigris space comes from former Fireside chef Cameron Lee Dunlap. According to Eater PDX, which broke the news, Morchella contains a number of ingredients not commonly seen on restaurant menus, including wood sorrel, wild sumac, elderflower and many mushrooms. Visit the cramped dining room for chanterelle mushroom soup, foraged salads or venison steak with charred dandelion greens.

New pizza places!

The generosity of pizzerias in times of a pandemic continues this fall. Newcomers include electric pizzaa pint-sized restaurant across from the old End of the World Bar; Meta Pizzaa new Brooklyn outfit from former Ración leader Anthony Cafiero; Cafe Ollian upcoming pizza collective in old Ned Ludd; Pacific Crust Pizzaan outdoor-inspired pizzeria in the former home of The Crown; Stella Pizzeria, the latest competitor in the crowded Sellwood-Moreland pizza scene; and Pizza Kata New York-style pie shop from the folks at Crown Paella.

Target date: Meta Pizza, Pacific Crust Pizza, Pizzeria Stellina and Pizza Kat are already open, while Electric Pizza is aiming for a November 11 opening and Cafe Olli is shooting for the end of the month.

Phuket Cafe (and Langbaan NW)

Probably the most anticipated restaurant on this list, if not 2021, Phuket Cafe is the next all-day restaurant from Portland restaurateur Ninsom and co-owner Eem Nelson. The restaurant, which will offer al fresco dining in a mock Thai train carriage, will serve as the busy main entrance to the new Langbaan. He plans to build on the exceptional pivot of the Thai tasting menu hotspot amid the pandemic to drink food and noodle soups.

Target date: New Year’s Eve, if all goes well.

Sun noodles

Diane Lam’s former pop-up restaurant at the Psychic Bar is set to take over the former Slabtown site of the XLB dumpling spot later this fall, Willamette Week and Eater PDX reported Friday. Look for Phnom Penh Noodles, Vietnamese Beef Noodle Stew, Green Pepper Wings and other dishes first seen at its original North Portland location.

Caspian Skewer

North Portland’s beloved Persian food cart hopes to return next year as a full restaurant in the West End neighborhood of Beaverton with saffron rice, grilled meat skewers and more.

Countryside

Southeast Portland’s upcoming cocktail bar and cart module will feature top-tier carts including Matt’s BBQ Tacos, Burger Stevens, Poppyseed and more when it opens early next year at 2216 SE 50th Ave.

Juliet

Portland International Airport’s first craft cocktail bar is set to open in the airport’s Concourse E in February, sporting a “women in aviation theme” and stunning views of Mount Hood.

Kann

After hosting a yurt pop-up last winter, “Top Chef” star Gregory Gourdet’s long-awaited wood-fired Haitian hotspot is now set to open in 2022.

Originally announced as a collaboration with MidCity SmashBurger, Eem co-owner Nelson now thinks this tiny St. Johns space at 8408 N. Lombard St. could become a brick-and-mortar home for his cocktail pop. -up, Shipwreck. Target date: spring 2022.
