Let’s talk winter decorating ideas! The winter season is a great time to sweep away all our Christmas decor and strip down our homes, adding soft, cozy, and warm embellishments. Here are 20 easy ideas to create coziness in your home this winter!

I’m one of those rare people who love winter. I love snow! And almost everything that goes along with cold weather. Winter is a time to make our homes cozy, warm, stripped-down, and welcoming. Here are a few things I do to make my home a sanctuary from the cold while adding lots of decor beauty to Tanglewood!

Create A Winter Vignette

Thefirst thing I usually do when I change my seasonal decor is to create a vignette. For winter, I like to use whites with warm neutrals. I love to use Mercury glass or burnished bronze because these metals are so reflective and add a bit of sparkle to even the darkest winter day!

Bleached wood or blond-toned items look beautiful in the winter.

Add A Cozy Throw

Every sofa in my house and a few chairs are accompanied by a throw in the winter. Soft, textural, and cozy. I think adding a throw to a sofa or favorite chair is one of the best ways to decorate for winter because a throw invites you to snuggle in!

The throw in the image below was my latest project. I knit it with large needles. So easy and a great way to keep my hands busy while watching tv.

Strip Down Your Decor

For me, winter is a time to strip down my decor and keep it simple. Spring, summer, and fall, as well as Christmas, are times for embellishing. But in the winter, my house takes a breather from all the extra decorations! This is one of my favorite winter decorating ideas!

I think this type of winter decorating is good for our homes and good for our souls!

Harness The Beauty And Ambiance Of Candles

Don’t forget to use candles this winter. And lanterns too.

Candlelight has such a pretty glow and will make any room extra cozy and romantic. The lantern below creates such beautiful patterns on the wall!

I’ve been using battery-operated candles for years. In the past, I’ve been notorious for forgetting to blow out candles! When we were out, we often had to turn back home to see if I had blown out a candle! Not anymore!

Most of my candles have timers, so I don’t have to switch them off and on every time I want to use them. They are a bit more expensive, but this is a look that is worth the investment! And they last for years!

Light up your winter nights with candles!

Add Cozy Pillows

One exception to all minimal embellishments in the winteris pillows! I can’t get enough of them. This year I kept my pillows primarily white with lots of texture!

I mixed old favorites with new ones. My pom pom pillow reminds me of snow. I’m seeing lots and lots of pom poms used in pillows this winter, as well as texture and faux fur!

If you use pillows that are close in color, texture will help them stand out from one another. Texture works to keep our decor interesting, especially if it is neutral.

Be Pro Pinecone

One decor element that I use from fall until spring is pinecones. They are perfect for decorating in the winter. I especially like pinecones with a little faux snow! So don’t put them away with the rest of your Christmas decorations! Use them liberally.

I like to put small pinecones in bowls and tuck them in vignettes or other arrangements. Pinecones are a signature StoneGable look in the winter.

Add Something Green To Your Winter Home

Don’t forget to add green plants or other organics in the winter to give life to your home!

I added a little faux fern in a white pot in the vignette below. It’s amazing what a bit of green can do for a vignette and a room!

Every January, I also plant herbs in little pots and keep them on my kitchen counter across from the windows. They thrive there and give me lots of cuttings for recipes as well as a touchstone of something growing and alive until the early spring flowers begin to bloom in our garden!

Yes. Just make sure it’s a faux tree. Why not take all the decorations off of the tree and use it in your home with only the lights. Such a pretty effect.

After Christmas, you want to get rid of the red and use a soft, more neutral color palette to decorate with. White is a beautiful color to use in your home for winter.
