7 Layer Burrito Taco Bell (vegetarian) (1)

Taco Bell is my all-time favorite fast food so when you’re missing your favorite fast food during quarantine life, just make it. My absolute favorite item to order at Taco Bell is the 7 Layer Burrito, it’s vegetarian, delicious, and gooey, what’s not to love?

Aside from the 7 Layer Burrito, I’m a huge fan of their Mexican Pizza which I have a copycat version of already. I also love their Bean & Cheese Burrito,Fiesta Veggie Burrito, and discontinued Spicy Tostada.

I have the Taco Bell Copycat SpicyTostada recipe on my blog. I still need to create recipes for the Taco Bell Bean & Cheese burrito and the insanely good Taco Bell Fiesta Veggie Burrito with creamy chipotle sauce. For now, I hope you try out this delicious homemade and copycat version of the 7-Layer Burrito at home.

How to order the 7 Layer Burrito at Taco Bell?

The 7 Layer Burrito has been discontinued at Taco Bell, however there is a workaround.

Here’s how I order it on the Taco Bell app:

  1. Order the Burrito Supreme (this has beef & beans).
  2. Get it without beef.
  3. Add Guacamole.
  4. Add Seasoned Rice.
  5. Get it Grilled.
  6. And that’s it. There’s your customized 7 Layer Burrito that you’ll end up paying $2 extra for. 🙂

Ingredients for 7 Layer Burrito

  • Mexican Rice – This recipe is super easy. You will just need oil, garlic, onions, tomatoes, rice, tomato paste, and basic spices. It can be made in the Instant Pot – recipe below.
  • Refried Beans – I use canned refried beans and flavor it up with taco seasoning, onions, and Taco Bell Hot Sauce. It’s so good.
  • Guacamole – You can use store-bought, but I just make my own and it’s so worth it. Recipe below.
  • Flour Tortillas – For the best results, use Mission Large White Flour Tortillas – the ingredients are not good, but this is the best brand on the market with soft large burrito tortillas.
  • Sour Cream
  • Tomatoes
  • Pepper Jack Cheese – I like Pepper Jack Cheese, but you can also use Cheddar Cheese, Mexican Cheese Blend, or Colby Cheese.
  • Lettuce – Use store-bought shredded lettuce or thinly chop lettuce.

Tips on making Taco Bell 7 Layer Burrito

  • tortilla: This is the worst part of this recipe since I used Mission Foods’ white flour tortilla which is heavily processed. Unfortunately, this is the only brand I could find at the time. Use your favorite tortilla wrap, a whole wheat wrap would work well, and one that’s about 10 inches in diameter. I love La Tortilla Factory brand.
  • beans: Try to use refried pinto beans for this recipe, however refried black beans would work well too.
  • guacamole: Prepare fresh guacamole with just a few simple ingredients.
  • cheese: I used shredded Pepper Jack Cheese in this recipe, however shredded cheddar cheese or a Mexican blend would work well too.
  • burrito: When you assemble the burrito, use the recommended amounts for the 7 layers else you won’t be able to close your burrito. You can use less or more of each of the 7 layers.
  • Taco Bell sauce: If you can’t find Taco Bell sauce, use Trader Joe’s Spicy Taco Sauce which is pretty exact, otherwise just use your favorite jar of salsa you have on hand.

FAQ

1. Does this 7 Layer Burrito really taste as good as Taco Bell’s version?

YES! And I promise you it’s better than Taco Bell’s version because it’s stuffed well, I didn’t skimp on eh ingredients.

2. Can I use whole-wheat tortilla instead of white?

Absolutely! Just know the flavor won’t be exactly like Taco Bell’s. Although the ingredients are terrible, Mission’s White Flour Tortillas are the best because they’re so soft.

3. Can I make this recipe vegan?

Yes! Simply replace cheese and sour cream with the vegan version.

4. Can I make the 7 Layer Burrito gluten-free?

Yes! You can use gluten-free tortillas.

5. What kind of beans should I use?

I highly recommend using pinto refried beans instead of black refried beans. Taco Bell is known to use pinto beans.

7. Is the 7 Layer Burrito vegetarian?

Yes. This burrito is 100% vegetarian, even the one that has been discontinued at Taco Bell.

8. Can I add chicken to this burrito?

Absolutely! Go ahead and add some grilled chicken and you’ll end up with Taco Bell’s Grilled Chicken Burrito.

9. Can I turn this recipe into a burrito bowl?

Sure. Simply skip the tortilla and you will end up with a Taco Bell Burrito Bowl. Throw on some Taco Bell sauce and creamy chipotle sauce for extra flavor.
