allplants | Are Onion Bhajis Vegan? (2024)

Whether you’re making your own bhajis from scratch, getting your go-to takeaway or simply stocking up from the supermarket, bhajis are an excellent accompaniment to many varieties of Indian cuisine. But are they vegan?

What are bhajis?

Bhaji, bhajji, bhajiya or bajji is the umbrella of fried, fritter-like snacks who call the Indian subcontinent home. They originate as part of Gujarati Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu cuisines and traditionally reserved for festivals and celebrations where they’re served with a hot drink. However, in the UK they’ve become an infamous starter for Anglo-Indian meals, with the most popular variety being onion bhajis.

Are onions bhajis vegan?

Traditionally, yes, onion bhajis are suitable for vegans. They’re made from a batter comprising of flour, baking powder, lemon juice and a variety of spices, not forgetting the onions themselves. Most supermarket options are entirely plant-based too, but it’s always worth double-checking the ingredients list or asking if eating out.
