Australia's second Ashes Test XI remains a closely guarded secret, with the team yet to be finalized just a day before the match. The hosts are keeping their cards close to their chest, waiting for a final inspection of the Gabba pitch before announcing their lineup.
Stand-in captain Steve Smith faced the media on Wednesday, but remained tight-lipped about the starting XI. The focus was on Josh Inglis, who is in the running to replace the injured Usman Khawaja, and Travis Head, who is expected to open the batting again after his impressive performance in Perth.
"We're considering a lot of options," Smith said. "We'll assess the wicket and then decide on our playing XI. Inglis is an aggressive batsman, and his strong performance in Sri Lanka and recent form make him a strong contender. He has a knack for handling fast bowling, so if he gets the chance, he'll be a valuable asset."
Beau Webster is also in the mix for a recall, potentially taking the No 6 spot. This would see Head open the batting with Jake Weatherald, and Cam Green moving up to No 5.
Smith did offer some insight into the fitness of Pat Cummins, leaving the door open for a potential surprise return to the team. Cummins, who missed the first Test due to a back injury, was initially omitted from the 15-man squad for the second match. However, he's been making steady progress and could be a late addition to the team.
"He's been looking good in the nets," Smith noted. "Of course, the intensity of matches varies, but he's making good progress. Cummins knows his body well, and we'll see if he's an option after our inspection of the wicket."
A return for Cummins would mean either Brendan Doggett or the spin veteran Nathan Lyon would be left out. Smith refused to guarantee Lyon's place, stating that the team selection would depend on the pitch conditions.
"We'll assess the surface and make a decision from there," he said. "Lyon is a quality bowler, and we'll consider all options."
The final decision on the lineup could be made later on Wednesday or even the day of the match, with play set to begin at the Gabba at 2 pm local time/3 pm AEDT on Thursday.
