Casually polished: what to wear when you don't want to have to think about it (2024)

Some days just require a no-fuss approach to getting dressed. We need clothes that are comfortable and functional, but we still want to look put-together. Here are 3 easy, casual outfit ideas for women over 50.

As part of my home re-decorating project, I’ve been having the entire interior repainted. Which, as it turns out, is more than a little bit disruptive. 😉 Especially the last few days, as they’ve been working in my bedroom/bathroom. So before they started (and my closet became inaccessible), I grabbed a few pieces I’ve been wearing on repeat. It prompted me to think about those “in a pinch” combos that always seem to work.

I think we all have those days (or weeks) when we just don’t have the bandwidth to get creative with our style. We need to throw on some clothes and just get on with things. But even on those days, I find looking neat, put-together, and intentional really does help my mood and outlook. So I’ve come up with a few go-to combos or formulas that take the guesswork out.

#1 – Coordinated neutrals

One of my foolproof outfit formulas is to start with a column of color. Here I’ve selected a navy sweater and a darker wash jean. I’ve added a relaxed knit blazer in a lighter color for a bit of soft structure. This one’s warm, but lightweight enough to layer under your winter coat. (I’d suggest sizing down for a more fitted look.)

More knit jacket/blazer options:

Sticking to a maximum of 3 neutrals also helps pull the look together. The bag and belt coordinate, as do the jacket and sneakers. You can use any neutrals that work with your seasonal palette. A pair of simple but visible earrings adds a finishing touch.

#2 – The Full Monochrome

A monochromatic look (all one color or black & white) takes much of the guesswork out. Black is easiest, but navy, gray, brown or camel will work as well. To keep a monochromatic outfit from looking flat, be sure to mix up the textures a bit.

#3 – Classic casual

Who says we have to reinvent the wheel every time we get dressed? Here’s a timeless, classic casual look that comes together in a snap. The collared shirt and loafers add some structure and polish, without being fussy. And yes, feel free to wear socks with those loafers.

While it might be a little boring to dress this way day in and day out, it’s helpful to have some simple-but-effective outfit ideas in our back pocket for those no-brainer days.
