I used to think having a classic style had everything to do with how much money you had and how many clothes you had. 10 Things For Classic Style

1. Schedule A Time.

One practice that I found to be valuable is scheduling a weekly time to practice creating looks. Every weekend I would schedule an hour and start with an empty standing rack. I would literally go through my closet and pull out items that I loved and felt great in. Once my rack was full of those items I would start incorporating different things I could wear with each piece to make outfits. Taking the time to practice building outfits can be really helpful.

2. Declutter Your Closet.

People with classic style declutter several times a year. They edit their closet to see what’s working and what’s not working. And let things go or find new ways to wear things. This is such an important piece for creating a classic style and feeling great in your clothes. You have to actually look at what you have and be able to edit to see what pieces are working.

Doing this a few times a year will really help you maximize your wardrobe and figure out what you have in your closet and what you love. Decluttering your wardrobe makes space for new items that you want to bring into your closet.

3. Build A Capsule Wardrobe.

Stylish women have a capsule wardrobe. While you may think a capsule wardrobe is boring or too minimal for you, having a capsule wardrobe can be the foundation of your closet, not necessarily your entire wardrobe. If you don’t have a capsule wardrobe it can be really hard to get dressed.

There was a time when I used to think basics were boring. I wouldn’t spend my limited wardrobe budget on clothing staples, but what I realized is that having elevated clothing staples helps you create more looks especially when you want to wear statement pieces.

Having a capsule wardrobe was probably the biggest thing that changed my relationship with my clothes. It gave me more options for creating outfits and having a classic style.

4. Photograph Your Looks.

When you put together outfits that you love take photographs. You can easily create an album on your phone. If you’re feeling stuck one morning and you’re not sure what to wear, go through your album and see which outfit calls to you. This will help you be more stylish on the days that it may feel harder to get dressed.

5. Pay Attention.

When I first started to dive into the world of fashion, I took it so seriously and made it like school. I would collect clothing catalogs and magazines and cut out pictures of different ways things were styled. I collected a whole binder of style inspiration and it became my fashion bible.

Paying attention to what inspires you can help you find a classic style. It takes time to develop your personal style. Look around for inspiration on the street, in magazines, or online. Fashionable women pay attention to style and how things are styled. If you want to get better at developing your style, pay attention.

6. Organize Your Closet.

Stylish women are able to find everything in their closets. An organized closet helps you know what you have because everything is accessible so you don’t waste time. This is such an important piece in getting to a place where you want with your style.

7. Know Your Style.

Stylish people know their personal style. How you define your style today may change and evolve. Knowing the adjectives that describe the style you’d like to have can point you in a direction as you declutter to determine what items fit your style. Items that don’t fit into your ideal personal style, may be pieces you decide to let go of.

8. Keep A Shopping List.

It’s helpful to create an ongoing shopping list. Asking yourself what items are missing from your closet that are making it hard to get dressed easily is key to classic style. When you’re getting ready and you realize you’re missing an item to complete an outfit, add what you’re missing to your list. So next time you shop, you know what to prioritize and look for.

Having a shopping list can be helpful if you’re having trouble getting dressed and feel like you have nothing to wear, even if your closet is full.

9. Skip Trends.

Fashion trends come and go and while I don’t think you need to avoid them, if you want to have great style you want to limit your wardrobe to having minimal trends.

Having a closet full of fast fashion trends isn’t going to help you get dressed. If you can’t build outfits easily, you’re not going to be stylish. Skipping most trends except for ones that you love is something that stylish people do.

10. Avoid Fast Fashion.

The trap that we can get into is buying fast fashion. Fast fashion items are made inexpensively and while they may not cost a lot, they are not made of great quality and tend not to last.

I know a lot of people think the more clothes they have, the easier it will be to get dressed. This is simply not true. I see this in my clients wardrobes again and again. If your closet is filled with mostly fast fashion, that may be the reason you have anything to wear.

I prefer to save my money and buy quality classic pieces that I love. Avoiding fast fashion will help you develop a classic style.

It doesn’t matter what your budget is or how many clothes you have, being stylish first comes from having confidence. That’s a skill to practice.
