Are you suddenly waking up late because your iPhone alarm isn't behaving the way it used to? You're not alone! Many users are discovering a sneaky change in iOS 26.1 that can lead to accidental 'stop alarm' taps instead of the beloved 'snooze.' But don't panic, there's a fix, and even more to explore in this update!
I'm Bridget Carey, and like many of you, I experienced the rude awakening that came with the new iOS 26 alarm design. As an award-winning tech reporter, I'm here to break down the changes in a way that's easy to understand, even if you're not a tech whiz. I've spent over 18 years covering consumer tech, from hosting daily news shows to writing syndicated columns. Now, as a mom who also keeps up with robots and toys (because, let's face it, robots are cool!), I'm always on the lookout for tech that makes our lives better – or at least less likely to make us late for work.
For those of us who upgraded to iOS 26, the alarm interface placed the 'stop' and 'snooze' buttons in close proximity. This resulted in many bleary-eyed users accidentally dismissing their alarms entirely. And this is the part most people miss: if you're like me and need glasses just to see the time in the morning, the new layout was a recipe for disaster!
Thankfully, Apple listened! The iOS 26.1 update addresses this issue by switching the 'stop alarm' function to a slide gesture. This makes it much harder to accidentally turn off your alarm while half-asleep.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some users actually prefer the button layout! They find the slide gesture less intuitive or simply want the option to quickly tap the screen to silence the alarm.
Good news for them! If you're not a fan of the slider, you can revert to the old button layout in the accessibility settings. Apple gives you the control to customize your experience. It's all about personal preference, right?
But there's more to iOS 26.1 than just alarm tweaks! In this week's episode of my video show "One More Thing," (embedded above), I dive into the biggest changes in iOS 26.1, including the adjustments to Apple's Liquid Glass menus. Remember that translucent effect? You can now fine-tune the opacity, making it look more like frosted glass if that's your style.
And Apple's design updates don't stop at the iPhone. Fire up your Apple TV (maybe to watch the new series Pluribus) and you'll notice a fresh, colorful Apple TV logo. Even Apple retail stores are getting a makeover, with refreshed displays expected soon.
All these changes are likely part of a larger strategy as Apple approaches its 50th anniversary. Expect more exciting updates and design tweaks in the coming months. Could the new Apple TV logo be a hint of things to come?
