Onkaparinga's SunSmart Initiative: A Community-Wide Skin Cancer Prevention Effort
Onkaparinga, a vibrant city in South Australia, is taking a proactive approach to skin cancer prevention with a unique partnership. The City of Onkaparinga, in collaboration with Cancer Council SA, has launched the SunSmart Parks Project, a groundbreaking initiative that aims to educate and remind residents and visitors about the importance of sun protection.
The project's innovative approach involves subtle yet engaging pavement stickers installed in prominent locations at 12 parks and playgrounds, and 8 community centers. These stickers feature Cancer Council's iconic Sid the seagull, promoting the well-known 'Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, and Slide' message. This message emphasizes the five essential steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from skin cancer, a preventable disease that claims over 2,000 lives annually in Australia.
The stickers provide more than just a visual reminder. They also include links and QR codes that offer real-time UV alerts and live UV levels, allowing individuals to make informed decisions about sun protection. When UV levels reach 3 and above, the recommended protective measures are clearly outlined, ensuring that residents and visitors can take the necessary steps to safeguard their skin.
City of Onkaparinga CEO, Phu Nguyen, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that it will provide vital reminders to thousands of people when they need it most. He emphasized the community's love for parks, playgrounds, and community centers and how the new visual cues will encourage responsible sun protection practices.
Cancer Council SA's Chief Executive, Kerry Rowlands, highlighted the significance of the partnership, especially given the alarming statistic that two-thirds of Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. She emphasized the role of modeling SunSmart behaviors for children, as it sets them up for a lifetime of healthy habits. With summer approaching, the stickers serve as a crucial reminder to the community to check UV levels and take protective measures when necessary.
