PIERCING AFTERCARE - Authent/Ink (2024)

Can I swim with my new piercing?

We recommend no swimming in oceans, spas, baths, jacuzzis, hot springs, or any chlorinated or salted water during the early healing phase (2-3 weeks). Furthermore we also recommend against saunas and steam rooms

Do you use a piercing gun?

No. A professional piercer would never use a piercing gun. This causes a lot of trauma to the area which causes longer healing times and more scar tissue that will be very visible if you even chose to remove the piercing and have it heal over. All of our piercings are done with single use catheters, and sterilised instruments and jewellery.

When can I take my jewellery out without the hole closing up?

This can take up to 6 months and is not recommended if you want to keep your piercing. This is because the hole will begin to shrink as soon as you remove the jewellery. How long it takes to shrink so that you cannot reinsert the jewellery varies on the person. It is best not to take the chance. Never force body jewellery into a piercing.

What are the chances of infection when getting a new piercing?

Our studio is NSW Health and Safety certified. We use a hospital grade autoclave and ultrasonic to clean and sterilise our instruments and jewellery, and all needles are single use. If you get pierced at our studio, and follow our strict aftercare guidelines, the chances of infection are close to zero.

How long does it take for my piercing to heal?

This will depend on your own body and how well you look after your piercing. Healing times vary from piercing to piercing and from person to person. The skin can also be affected by the aftercare the piercing receives. If you touch a healing piercing with dirty hands, let it come into contact with body fluids or rough treatment or use cleansers, soaps, or antiseptic solutions that are too harsh, this can cause problems and significantly lengthen your healing time. If you follow our strict aftercare guidelines and you’ll minimise healing time and the risk of problems.

Below are estimated healing times for specific piercings. The jewellery you are pierced with should not be removed during the healing time. Here is a rough indication of piecing locations and they’re estimated healing times.

Ear Lobe 1-2 months

Ear Cartlidge 6-12 months

Nostril 2-4 months

Septum 3-4 months

Lip 2-4 months

Tongue 1-2 months

Navel 6-12 months

Nipple 4-6 months

Always remember that a new piercing must be treated gently with care and may remain tender or red for up to 3 weeks.

After the times listed above, you can remove your jewellery for a short time. However, your piercing may begin to shrink. We cannot give you an exact time for how long you can remove your jewellery before it becomes difficult to reinsert. This varies between people. Just remember – never force jewellery into a piercing that has shrunk and wait for the appropriate healing time as listed above.

Why can't I have a smaller /shorter piercing?

Sometimes, what you imagine will look best will not work best when you get pierced for the first time. The size of the body jewelry needs to be tailored to your body’s individual structure. You may have to start with a practical piece first and then choose something more fashionable later on, once your piercing has healed.

What is the best metal to be pierced with?

Titanium is the optimum choice for new piercings, followed by 316L surgical implantation grade stainless steel. Gold must be at least 14 carat or higher for initial piercings. You must avoid silver, gold plated, brass, bronze and copper.

We use ONLY titanium jewellery for piercing in our studio.

Are the piercing needles every re-used for other people?

Never. You can relax knowing that we absolutely never use a needle on more than one person. All needles come individually wrapped in a pre-sterilised packet. To reassure you on this process, your piercer will open the sterile packets infront of you for all your new and sterilised equipment.

We use hospital grade IV catheter needles in all our piercings.

Can you re-pierce holes that have closed up?

This one is easy. Yes we can. Please feel free to contact the studio to discuss any special requests you may have.

How long do I have to wait before I can change my jewellery in my new piercing?

This timeframe will differ from person to person, as healing times is a very individual thing. We recommend a minimum of 3 months, but you are welcome to pop in to the studio to discuss this at any time.

At what age can I get pierced?

You must be 16 years or older to get pierced in our studio. Intimate piercings (which includes genitals and nipples) are strictly 18+.
