Summer Basics: Staying Stylish in the Heat — Meghan Ashley Styling (1)

This past week, I had the wonderful privilege to talk at Inspire, Fidelis’s end of the year retreat.

Fidelis is a great organization dedicated to building virtue in young women, led by mentors of all ages, and – I must say – I’ve never been so impressed by a group of young ladies! They are so joyful, energetic, and happy to be Catholic. It was amazing to see. I can’t say enough good things about it and highly recommend checking out their website… Maybe you (or someone you know) would be interested!

During their retreat, they focused on the virtue of justice: justice to God, to their neighbor and to themself.

Dressing oneself well is giving justice to your dignity. Dressing with respect shows others that you are excited to be in their presence. Dressing up shows you are ready each day to be a soldier for Christ.

As I was giving my talk, the girls reflected the same opinion as many of my adult clients: Fall is the most fun season to style.

This leads to everyone also agreeing that Summer is the most difficult.

However, I really think it only takes a few KEY pieces to pull off classy, stress-free, chic Summer style.

  1. Versatile Dresses: For Mass on Sunday, or during the week with friends and family, a simple dress can be worn with sneakers to be casual or with a nicer flat for Mass. Get creative with changing up your shoe and styling your hair (it goes a long way) or add a cardigan (for Mass). These dresses are easy to accessorize, and come in fabrics that are light but still structured for shape.

  2. Cropped Wide Leg Pant: Very feminine and highlights the hourglass frame, especially if you struggle finding good shorts, this is a fabulous option. It’s one of the most flattering cuts and looks more elegant. The wide leg not only looks great but adds a more feminine feel, and is super easy to dress up with a blouse and flats, or dress down with a sneaker and t-shirt.

  3. The ”It’s Melting Hot” Outfit: Something extremely lightweight, that if you had to be outside all day, you wouldn’t die of sweat. Linen and cotton (in light colors) are your best bets for staying cool in the heat, especially if it’s a dress, but it can also mean a cotton t-shirt and an airy, light skirt. Stay away from fabrics that can’t breathe, like polyester and synthetics!

  4. Shoes: A mule, a flat, a sandal/espadrille, and a sneaker. These will give you the versatility to let your core pieces strut their stuff. A mule in a fun, bright color can add a “pop” to neutral versatile dresses. Especially if you have trouble fitting flats, a mule is the perfect option. Espadrilles have that ‘French chic’ feel and you can wear them all summer long (or interchange with a sandal). And what doesn’t go with a white sneaker?! With dresses or jeans - you are set. Finally, a classic flat is perfect for dressier occasions and for Mass.

  5. Summer Cardigan/Jacket/Wrap: Stay with a neutral color story, like a light gray, light camel or cream choice that will match your dresses for Mass, or go with jeans and a t-shirt. Going from dressy to casual is key. This is important because it’s likely that some of your dresses won’t have sleeves, and you want to be sure you can wear these dresses to Mass. A stylish light layer is also great for brisk mornings or cool evenings. It can change up your Look depending on how you style it (which is what we’ll get to in a little bit).

  6. Accessories: Sunnies (sunglasses) are a major way to change up a summer look without changing a lot of outfits. They really direct a Look so treat sunnies like you do jewelry. They also outlive clothes, so they’re a great investment(and healthy for your eyes). You can also be intentional with which style of necklace will really work with your summer core pieces. Are your necklaces more of a delicate/classic style or more of a statement/artistic choice? Try using silk neck scarves either around your neck untied (perfect for going into ac), in your hair, or knotted on your purse. And don’t forget how a cute sun hat makes a big statement too and can really pop up a Look (plus being great for your skin). Headbands are another great accessory especially for humid climates!

And that’s it! Breaking it down to its separate pieces can make it really simple, right? And when it feels simple, it’s easier to feel creative!
