Hitting the gym, hot yoga, neighborhood stroll — we all move in different ways. But whether we’re breaking a sweat with a treadmill workout or breaking the bank on a $9 latte, we all want the same things from our plus-size workout clothes: support, comfort, and trendy styles that actually come in our size. It’s not a lot to ask, but finding the best plus-size workout clothes can often feel like a never-ending journey. Fortunately, activewear brands have come a long way, expanding their leggings, shorts, sports bras, and top offerings past a size XL (often far, far beyond). And it’s not just workout clothes for light training or running errands — we’re talking options for your toughest workouts, too. As someone who wears plus-size activewear, I personally have a deep understanding of what a perfect fit means above a size 14. From testing for squat-proof leggings that don’t fall down the moment you do one jumping jack, to sports bras that keep everything (and we mean everything) in place, you can feel confident that the brands recommended in this article hit the mark. For this piece specifically, we also highlighted the highest-rated products from our testing in each category so you can get a quick, at-a-glance look at the pros and cons of a specific plus-size activewear piece from the brand. This offers readers of all sizes a starting point in their activewear journey. Why We Like It: You can find every kind of basic in high-quality fabrics. It’s Worth Noting: Most Athleta stores don’t carry extended sizes in their brick and mortars. For no-frills plus-size workout clothes with incredible quality, Athleta is the perfect pick. They’re known for buttery-soft fabrics and a range of styles for anything and everything — HIIT and cardio to chill, off-duty days. And while they’re on the pricier side (leggings will run you around $98 and bras around $60, comparable to Lululemon), you’ll likely find the sleek silhouettes, high-tech fabric, and sheer number of styles to be well worth it — especially if you catch one of their frequent sales. Athleta’s extended sizes run from 1X to 3X, and they also carry sports bras specifically for cup sizes D to DD+ — so you can be sure you’ll have the most support possible. Our favorite Athleta legging, the Salutation Stash has a wide waistband that prevents rolling and two deep side pockets in a second-skin (but not constricting) material. Why We Like It: $50-and-under styles mean your activewear drawer stays stocked. It’s Worth Noting: A majority of the pieces are designed for low intensity workouts. The next time you decide to do a little Old Navy shopping, don’t skip their plus-size workout clothes selection. Boasting over 600 different workout styles, the brand has more to offer than you might think. And with most silhouettes running you under $50, there’s no reason you shouldn’t add a few new pieces to your cart. Most of their signature fabrics — like PowerSoft and FlowForm — are exactly what their names suggest. These pieces are lightweight and designed with comfort in mind. So whether you’re in the market for a cute new tennis outfit or a matching set for yoga, Old Navy Active has you covered. You’ll find nearly all of their activewear is available in extended sizes XL to 4X (16 to 30, numerically, according to their size chart). Bonus? It’s never priced higher than straight sizes, so budget-friendly actually refers to every single size. The namesake fabric in the PowerSoft 7/8-length leggings is known for a hint of compression with a soft, touchable finish and a waistband that gently hugs (never pinches) your body. Why We Like It: Every style is crafted from recycled materials. It’s Worth Noting: Limited-edition colors tend to sell out quickly. The perfect combination of trendy silhouettes, sustainable materials, and ethical manufacturing, Girlfriend Collective stands out in so many ways. Not only is their activewear selection designed for performance, but every style is selfie-worthy, especially the matching sets. Over the last several years, the brand has evolved from carrying a few pairs of leggings and bras to offering an incredible selection of pieces — including bodysuits, skirts, sweats, and even underwear. The fact that every single style is crafted in recycled materials is the cherry on top. Whether you’re into everyday neutrals for the gym or bold fashion colors in cozy silhouettes, you can’t go wrong with Girlfriend Collective. Their plus sizes range from XXL to 6XL, making the brand one of the most inclusive options as well. A winner in our 2024 Fitness Awards, we’re obsessed with the flounciness of the Racer FLOAT Ultralight Skort and the pillowy softness of the built-in compression shorts. Oprah calls herself a huge fan of the Compressive Pocket Leggings, and we can see why — in fact, they stood up to the hottest, sweatiest yoga class we’ve ever taken. Why We Like It: High-quality fabrics and super-soft styles are hard to beat. It’s Worth Noting: The number of plus-size styles is much smaller than standard sizes. For trend-followers and gym girlies alike, Lululemon extending their legging size range was a huge deal. Finally, those above a size 14 had a chance to experience what every yogi on Instagram had been raving about for years. And while it’s not particularly budget-friendly (we’re talking $88 to $198 per pair of pants), the brand’s buttery-soft and majorly supportive leggings are worth trying.More than just an IG-viral company, though, Lululemon workout clothes are designed for performance and high-sweat activity. Whether that’s Pilates or boxing, you can find total support and comfort in their activewear. Lululemon does tend to run a bit small, and their plus-size workout clothes are available in a smaller range of 16 to 20. Is it basic to choose the Aligns as our favorite Lululemon leggings? Yeah, maybe — but the leggings are oh-so-stretchy and truly pioneered the leggings-as-pants movement. Unlike the more compressive Lululemon leggings, which we’ve noted may run small, the Align waistband is accommodating even if your waistline fluctuates a bit. Why We Like It: The range of support levels is unmatched. It’s Worth Noting: Fabletics is a membership-based brand. While Fabletics is known for its leggings, the brand’s sports bras are a bit of an unsung hero. Ranging from low-impact for everyday wear to high-impact sports bras for running or high-intensity training, there’s an option for everyone and every activity level. Most styles feature removable cups, and some even offer adjustable straps — so you can tailor the fit to your body, no matter your cup size. (Even some non-sports bras can’t offer that kind of support for all bodies!) The focus is on the details, and you’ll find things like reflectivity, cooling fabrics, and fun designs (like strappy backs) are the norm. The opportunity to make it a set with matching leggings only adds to the appeal. Fabletics’ plus-size workout clothes range from sizes 1X to 4X in almost every single style. The All Day Every Day Low Impact Sports Bra lives up to its name. Whether it’s everyday activities or training at the gym, you can count on the perfect amount of support — thanks to the adjustable straps, optional racerback, and removable cups. It does the job every time. Why We Like It: The brand specializes in plus-size fit. It’s Worth Noting: Colors and prints are somewhat limited. While most activewear brands begin with sizes 0 to 14 and expand from there, Superfit Hero has always focused on designing plus-size workout clothes. They’re inspired by the plus-size community, creating activewear that not only fits an extended size range, but celebrates every body. And though they’re online only, the brand has tested its size chart to ensure you’ll find the perfect fit every time. (And if not, returns and exchanges are free.) What makes Superfit Hero really stand out is their dedication to catering to plus-size folks, offering everything from high-waisted leggings to soft loungewear. Sizes run from L to 7X, making them the most inclusive on our list. We put the Pocket Flare Leggings through the ringer, and they held up impressively despite numerous wears and washes. The flat-lock seams kept us chafe-free, whether at the gym or on the couch. Why We Like It: Styles flow with the body for max comfort. It’s Worth Noting: Most silhouettes only offer light to medium support. There’s something about Beyond Yoga styles that makes you want to hit your nearest studio ASAP, mat in hand. The brand does an exceptional job creating soft, inviting silhouettes that feel perfect for a slow flow or hot yoga. And while, of course, you can wear their styles to the gym or other studio classes, we’d be remiss if we didn’t suggest you try them out for your next yoga session.Nearly every style is designed with utmost comfort in mind — meaning fabrics that you have to feel to believe and silhouettes that move with you in every pose. Because of this, you’ll find most pieces offer a lighter compression and a lower support range. Sticking with studio workouts is typically the way to wear these ultra-soft styles. No matter how bend and stretch, count on the longer top lengths and wide waistbands for coverage and support in every pose. Beyond Yoga extended sizes are available in 1X to 4X. Another 2024 Fitness Awards winner, the 5” waistband on the Spacedye Out Of Pocket High Waisted Leggings is notably thick, but never squeezes. The supple, smooth fabric is a dream against your skin. Why We Like It: Styles are designed with high-sweat activity in mind. It’s Worth Noting: You won’t find many fashion or trend-inspired pieces. With a reputation for incredible high-performance workout gear (after all, so many professional athletes can be spotted in Nike), it’s no wonder this brand is one of the best for more intense activity. Workouts like running and jogging, or even sports (soccer, basketball, etc.) typically require a little more support than barre or yoga. And for plus-size fitness fanatics and athletes, this can be especially true. In this case, Nike is the one to trust. Because they cater to athletes in all different arenas, the brand knows a thing or two about supportive gear that’s made to last. For plus-size shoppers, this means compressive leggings, high-support bras, and shorts designed for myriad different activities. Overall, Nike is the brand to run in. Its extended sizes range from 1X to 3X. The Dri-Fit One High-Waisted 3" Brief-Lined Shorts got a seal of approval from the thick-thigh club (read: no chafing), and the built-in briefs kept us feeling covered even with the loose, flowy design. Why We Like It: Leggings are squat-proof with no-roll waistbands It’s Worth Noting: The brand is online only, so prepare to consult a size chart. Like most activewear brands, Lola Getts focuses on fit — with one huge difference from competitors. The brand fits its pieces on different size models (a size 16 and a size 6), rather than crafting styles on a smaller model and increasing the size from there. This ensures more accurate sizing — meaning your clothes will fit like a glove every single time. Lola Getts keeps shopping simple with low to high-compression options, along with different fabrics for different coverage. Finding leggings you can safely squat in and a bra that won’t ride up while you’re lifting? A training day game changer. You’ll find plus sizes 1X to 4X available on the brand’s site. The Hi-Rise Square Pocket Leggings not only hold you in while you work out, but feature a unique textured fabric that disguises any bumps or rolls — helping you feel your most confident at the gym or out and about. Why We Like It: From lifestyle sneakers to running shoes, there are so many options. It’s Worth Noting: Keep an eye out for unisex sizing. The best workout set is nothing without a supportive and comfortable pair of shoes. And for those who need a little extra width in theirs, finding the perfect fit isn’t always an easy task. Unlike so many shoe brands, though, New Balance offers many of their styles in wide widths — a huge deal for both gym days and weekend walks. Whether you’re in search of a running shoe that actually fits your foot or those trendy everyday sneakers all over TikTok, New Balance has plenty of options (and we’ve tested most of them). Of course, not every style comes in different width options, but iconic silhouettes like the Made in USA 990v6 and Fresh Foam X 1080v13 are even available in extra-wide sizes. New Balance offers women’s shoe sizes 5 to 12 with wide and/or extra-wide options in most styles. The Fresh Foam X 1080 v13, our pick for the best running shoe for beginners, is also wide-feet friendly, and we love the smooth cushioning on this everyday trainer.
