Why Should I Make homemade Pancakes?

This delicious pancake recipe makes amazing thick fluffy pancakes. I might be a little bit biased, but I think they will become your family’s new favorite pancake recipe. I know that you can easily grab a box of frozen pancakes or a box of pancake mix at the store but there is seriously nothing better than a freshly made pancake that is made with homemade pancake mix.

There are many reasons that making pancakes from scratch at home is better than the storebought mixes and frozen pancakes, aside from how much better they taste.

  1. Cost-effective. Making pancakes from scratch can be much more cost-effective than buying pre-made mixes or going out to a restaurant.
  2. Customizable. When you make pancakes from scratch, you have complete control over the ingredients and can customize them to your liking. For example, you can add fresh fruit, chocolate chips, or nuts to the batter.
  3. Healthier. Homemade pancakes can be made with healthier ingredients like whole wheat flour, almond milk, and coconut oil, making them a better option than store-bought mixes or restaurant pancakes.
  4. Fresher. Homemade pancakes are made with fresh ingredients, which can make them taste much better than pre-made mixes or restaurant pancakes that may have been sitting for a while.

Tips for Making the Best Homemade Pancakes from Scratch at Home

Mix dry ingredients first. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Sifting the flour can also help to make the pancakes lighter and fluffier.

Do NOT over mix. You want those small lumps of batter in your pancake mix, they are vital to making pancakes fluffy. If you over mix the batter you will end up with tough, unfluffy pancakes.

Don’t flip your pancakes too soon (or too late). When you see the bubbles starting to pop flip that pancake over! Overcooking pancakes will also make them tough and unfluffy.

Combine wet and dry ingredients. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. It’s okay if there are a few lumps.

Let the batter rest. Let the batter rest for about 10-15 minutes. This will allow the gluten to relax and give you fluffier pancakes.

Heat your pan. Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium-low heat. You can also add a small amount of butter or oil to the pan to prevent the pancakes from sticking.

Use a non-stick pan, nonstick skillet or griddle. A non-stick pan or griddle will ensure that your pancakes don’t stick and will result in evenly cooked pancakes. It is also important that you grease your pan well if you are not using a nonstick pan. Pancakes will stick to a pan if it is not greased enough.

How to Make Pancakes fluffy

Using a homemade pancake mix is only the start to making fluffy pancakes. The next steps is while you are cooking them.

  • Use fresh ingredients. The most important thing is using fresh ingredients. Old ingredients will give you flat pancakes.
  • Don’t Flip to soon. When cooking the pancakes do not flip them over to cook the other side to early.
  • Don’t press down on the pancakes. Pressing down on the pancakes with a spatula can cause the air bubbles to escape, resulting in flatter and denser pancakes.

What Can I add to My Pancakes?

You will have the most amazing pancakes and be able to add in any add-ins you want with this recipe, from berries to chocolate chips and more! I think this is the best pancake recipe for kids because they can get creative with their add-ins! This is our go-to homemade pancake recipe that works for adding everything from fruit to chocolate chips to the pancake better once its been made.

This spatula that is pancake sized is my favorite thing to use when I am making homemade pancakes. It is huge and makes it so your pancakes won’t flop over when you are flipping them!

I also like to use this pancake mix dispenser so that I have less mess when I am pouring the pancake batter into my greased pan on the stove. I want as little mess as possible so I can enjoy my pancakes while they are right out of the pan!

How to Keep Pancakes Warm when Making large batches

If you are making a lot of pancakes for a brunch that you want to keep warm, place the cooked pancakes on a baking sheet and place in the oven set at 200°F until you’re ready to serve. This will ensure that they stay warm and don’t get soggy.

How to Make Pancake Mix for Homemade Pancakes

The boxes of pancake mix you buy in the store are nothing more than dry ingredients. When you are cooking pancakes at home with a store-bought mix you are using ingredients that you already probably have at home. Boxed pancakes are quick and easy to use but the pancakes are far from amazing.

The secret is to make your own homemade pancake mix to use when you are making homemade pancakes. And I have to tell you it is just as easy to make your own pancake mix at home as buying a box in the store. Not only will you have better pancakes but it is cheaper to make your own mix. You can double, trip, or even quadruple or more this pancake dry mix recipe and then store it in a canister for easy pancake making!

Can I make the Pancake Mix ahead of time?

Yes! If you want to mix the dry ingredients ahead of time and store them for making pancakes later you can. Just mix all of the dry ingredients and store them in an airtight container.

How to Store Homemade Pancake Mix

In a large mixing bowl combine the dry ingredients and mix well with a whisk. Then store the pancake mix in an airtight container. A glass jar or a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid works well. Make sure the container is clean and dry. Pancake mix should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. A pantry or cupboard is an ideal location. Do not store the mix in the refrigerator or freezer as this can cause the mix to become stale.

To make my life easier many times I will mix a full batch of the dry mix and pour it into a mason jar so each jar is already premeasured to make a full batch of pancakes. I like to keep multiple jars in the pantry so it is easy for me to pull out and make the pancakes fresh quickly. Then when it is time to make the pancakes just mix the wet ingredients and mix them with the dry ingredients.

How Long is homemade pancake mix good for?

Homemade pancake mix can be stored for up to 3 months. After that, the baking powder in the mix may lose its effectiveness, and the pancakes may not rise properly.

How to Serve Homemade Pancakes

There are many ways to serve fresh made pancakes, our favorite way is with butter and a drizzle of warm maple syrup.

Fresh fruit. Pancakes go well with fresh fruit such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or sliced bananas. You can also serve a fruit salad on the side.

Syrup. Real Maple syrup is a classic pancake topping, but you can also use fruit syrups like blueberry syrup, honey, or agave nectar. You can warm up the syrup in a saucepan or in the microwave for a few seconds to make it more runny.

Butter. Melted butter is a simple but delicious topping for pancakes. You can use salted or unsalted butter, depending on your preference.

Whipped Cream. You can add a dollop of whipped cream to the top of your pancakes to make them more decadent.

Nut butter. Peanut butter, almond butter, or other nut butter can be spread on top of pancakes for a protein boost and delicious flavor.

What to serve with Pancakes

When we have pancakes I also like to include sides, especially if we are making breakfast for dinner. There are lots of tasty sides to serve with pancakes for breakfast. Some of our favorites are:

Meat. Bacon, Sausage, and pork roll are great protein sides to serve. Pancakes pair well with them all. You can serve them on the side or chop them up and mix them into the pancake batter before cooking. Be sure to check out the best ever bacon recipe.

Eggs: Pancakes and scrambled eggs make a classic breakfast combo. You can serve them on the same plate or as separate dishes. You can also serve them with hardboiled eggs, jammy eggs, poached eggs or sunny side up eggs.

Fruit. Fruit Salad is a great option but you can also serve your favorite fruit cut up. We like bananas, strawberries, blackberries and really any type of fruit as a side dish.

How to Freeze Cooked Pancakes

I like to make large batches of pancakes at a time so in the mornings on busy days my kids can just pop them in the microwave and heat them up. You can wrap them up into plastic wrap and make packages with 2-4 pancakes in each one or you can store the pancakes in a large freezer bag and remove them individually.

How to Store Frozen Pancakes Loose in a Freezer Bag

  1. Let the pancakes cool. After cooking the pancakes, let them cool down to room temperature before freezing. This will prevent them from getting soggy when they are frozen.
  2. Place pancakes in a single layer on a baking sheet: Place the cooled pancakes in a single layer on a baking sheet or a plate. Make sure that the pancakes are not touching each other.
  3. Freeze the pancakes. Put the baking sheet or plate with the pancakes in the freezer and let them freeze for about 1-2 hours. This will prevent the pancakes from sticking together when they are stored in a container.
  4. Store the pancakes. Once the pancakes are frozen, remove them from the baking sheet or plate and transfer them to a freezer-safe container or resealable plastic bag. Label the container with the date of freezing so you can keep track of how long they have been frozen. Put the container with the pancakes in the freezer and freeze them for up to 2 months.

How to Store Frozen Pancakes in bundles

  1. Let the pancakes cool. After cooking the pancakes, let them cool down to room temperature before freezing. This will prevent them from getting soggy when they are frozen.
  2. Stack the Pancakes. Once cooled stack the pancakes with 3-4 pancakes per stack.
  3. Wrap the Pancakes. Using plastic wrap, wrap the stack of pancakes in the plastic wrap. Once they are all wrapped place the wrapped stacks of pancakes into a large freezer bag.
  4. Freeze the pancakes. Place the bag of pancakes into the freezer. Be sure to Label the container with the date of freezing so you can keep track of how long they have been frozen. Put the container with the pancakes in the freezer and freeze them for up to 2 months.

How to Reheat Frozen Pancakes

To reheat the frozen pancakes, you can use a toaster, microwave, or oven. Toaster and oven methods will give you a crispy texture, while the microwave will make the pancakes softer.

We prefer to heat them in the microwave as we like our pancakes softer. It takes about 45 seconds to 1 minute to reheat the stack of 3-4 pancakes while still wrapped in the plastic wrap. If you are reheating individual pancakes place them on a plate and heat in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute depending on how many you are reheating.
