Tool in Perth: An Unforgettable Spectacle at RAC Arena
Words often fail when trying to capture the essence of a Tool performance. Spectacular, breathtaking, and otherworldly barely scratch the surface. But, for the 14,000 lucky attendees at Perth's RAC Arena on that warm Tuesday night in 2025, the experience was nothing short of transformative.
Opening the night, Byron Bay's Headsend delivered a powerful performance. Their grunge sound, reminiscent of Nirvana, Silverchair, and Soundgarden, captivated the audience and set the stage for the main act. Their ability to fill the arena with their sound was truly impressive.
Before Tool even graced the stage, a strict no-smartphone policy was in effect, a familiar rule for seasoned Tool fans. But here's where it gets controversial... This policy, while debated by some, ultimately enhances the concert experience, encouraging full immersion in the moment.
As the lights dimmed and the crowd erupted, Tool emerged, launching into their set with 'Fear Inoculum'. Frontman Maynard James Keenan took his usual spot at the back, while guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey, and bassist Justin Chancellor unleashed a sonic and visual masterpiece. The massive screen behind the band displayed stunning visuals, from oceanic volcanoes to cosmic explorations, perfectly complementing the music.
After the 10-minute opening track, Keenan engaged with the crowd, playfully stirring up some local rivalry and encouraging the audience to fully embrace the show. He humorously addressed the phone ban, urging everyone to “do something different for a change” and be present for the entire performance. "It's only two hours," he quipped, adding a blunt invitation to those still hesitant to put their phones away.
The setlist then moved into 'The Grudge', a throwback to the classic Lateralus album, accompanied by fitting visuals. 'Rosetta Stoned', 'Pneuma', and 'Jambi' were among the highlights, showcasing the band's range and raw power. This show was clearly designed for the hardcore fans, with deep cuts and few mainstream hits.
Keenan even joked about the age of some fans, referencing the last time they played 'H.' from the Aenima album. After a 12-minute encore, complete with a countdown, Tool returned for an epic finale.
The encore began with 'Chocolate Chip Trip', featuring a drum solo, and their cover of Black Sabbath's 'Hand of Doom'. The show concluded with 'Invincible' and 'Vicarious', leaving fans in awe. The two-hour musical journey created memories that no smartphone could ever capture.
