Cheerful givers give willingly, even joyously – not grudgingly or under compulsion. Their giving flows out of the joy of their relationship with Jesus – like Zacchaeus, who responded to his encounter with Jesus with overflowing generosity (Luke 19:1-9).

A perfect scriptural example of the gift of giving is the story of The Good Samaritan. In this story, not only is the Samaritan generous with his money, time, and resources – but he also knows exactly how to use his resources in a way that best helps the beaten man with a short-term care plan and long-term care plan.

The New Covenant giving, as with all dispensations, flows from the heart and is personally determined. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 NASB states, “He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

When we give generously and sacrificially, it's not because God needs anything, but because we want to show our love for him. Giving is an expression of obedience, yes, but also of gratitude, trust, and increasing joy. God seeks out and recognizes those who worship him.

Living with open hands is a crucial spiritual habit that all followers of Jesus must embrace. The best part is the results are so worth it. There are many different ways to give to God—you can give your money, time, skills to help others… the list could go on and on.
