What is Y2K Fashion? The Ultimate Y2K Lookbook | The Sole Supplier (2024)

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll realise that Y2K is the hottest trend of 2022. However, navigating this really hot or really not look can be tricky, especially when you want to still look cool in the current day, and less like you’re off to a costume party. So, how do you embody your inner Britney, Christina and Paris Hilton in 2022? Twenty years later, some of the hottest 2000s looks are making a big comeback thanks to the likes of Instagram, TikTok and Euphoria (as well as just general nostalgia), all of which were not around at the start of the millennium.

Typically, ‘00s fashion was all about showing off your hot bod (and yes - all bodies are hot bodies). We’re talking tit*, tums and bums. Never fear, there is definitely a way to embody Y2K fashion without feeling over exposed. We’re going to talk you through all the different ways you can get your Y2K on and live your best Elle Woods lifestyle. Think back: what were you dressing your Bratz dolls in way back when? Fur-collard coats? Wide-leg, low-rise jeans? Accessorised with a flip phone? Channel this and think kitsch.

What does Y2K mean?

Y2K literally means ‘Year 2000’ and encompasses trends that span from the very late nineties to 2009. The phase has remerged in the early 2020s as Millennials long for their teen years once again, and Gen-Z, who were too young at the time to fully appreciate the greatness that was the noughties, adopt the fashion and styles from the time. Many early noughties chick flicks, including Mean Girls, 13 Going On 30 and Legally Blonde, are all still resonant with tweens and teens today, meaning that Y2K fashion continues to be as popular as ever.

What is Y2K Fashion?

Y2K fashion is the style of the 2000s. The most notable Y2K fashion trends such as low-rise jeans, velour tracksuits and bandanas were worn by icons of the 00s era such as Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Destiny's Child. Loud statement pieces were the way to go and the style perfectly embodies the "in your face" attitude of the era.

Where can I buy Y2K clothing?

Urban Outfitters really take the biscuit when it comes to new Y2K-style clothing. However, if you’re looking to avoid fast fashion and get your hands on some ‘proper’ vintage clothing, hit up eBay and Depop; you could find some absolute gems from the actual ‘00s. ASOS Marketplace is also a great place to find some 2000s-like styles from independent retailers and vintage stores. Or just type 'Y2K' into ASOS search: it couldn’t be easier.

Why is Y2K fashion back in style?

Y2K is back thanks to TikTok. Y2K is taking over the short-form video app, and influencers are encouraging buying and styling of the Y2K theme more than ever before. As well as this, key pop cultural moments continue to drive the trend, with the likes of Euphoria and Riverdale taking over our screens. Cheryl Blossom very much reminds us of Cher Horowitz, once again tapping into our inner love for the Y2K trend without us even realising.

It’s important to remember that most fashion is cyclical and everything will make a return, loved or otherwise, at some point. At the start of the decade, the internet was just becoming the sensation it is now, meaning the introduction and obsession with new social media is always going to spark a bit of nostalgia for the beginning of media consumerism and pop culture. Although this is all fully integrated into our society now, there was a certain naivety at the start. The ‘00s was about looking fly and having fun, and we could all take that on board today.

Where should I look for Y2K inspiration?

In the words of Elle Woods, ‘What? Like it’s hard?’. Jokes aside, the internet has endless Y2K inspo and you probably don’t even realise it. Pages on Instagram such as @00sfreak and @2000s.babe are your ultimate guide to the babes of the noughties. At the end of the day though, you just need to wear what the hell you like to feel G.L.A.M.O.R.O.U.S af (creds to Fergie for that spelling).

Y2K Outfit Inspiration

If you're looking for the best way to style some of the noughties best styles, we've got you! Whether you're feeling nostalgic for your childhood or just looking for some new style inspo, the 00s was a decade full of fun trends which are so fun to add to your wardrobe. Get your notebooks at the ready 'cos we're gonna give some styling tips for our favourite Y2K fashion trends!

Metallics

Make like a magpie and get your hands on anything and everything shiny! This ruched, metallic purple tank is fitting with all our ‘00s dreams. Silver, shiny puffer jackets are an essential for winter and will add a splash of noughties winter wonderland to any outfit.

Velour Tracksuit

Juicy Couture was the brand of the moment and is making a huge comeback with stock now available at the likes of Urban Outfitters. We know that hot pink was the colour of the decade, so having this velour tracksuit in this colour just makes our lives. Kim’s too-dark eye makeup and multi-coloured LV holdall just finishes off the look, along with the flip flops. What was it about flip flops? No matter the occasion, whack on a pair of sandals and you’ll be ready to rock.

Chunky Sneakers

Chunky sneakers have been around a lot longer than you think! The most iconic chunky-sneaker style has to be Emma Bunton’s Baby Spice, and this was a trend that lasted long through the end of the 1990s to the mid 2000s. To recreate this look now, brands like Naked Wolfe and Buffalo ideal for finding the extreme platformed sneaker. Perfect for making those ‘lil legs look longer, platform sneakers add that hint of nostalgia to an outfit whilst being SO up to date.

Pleated Skirts

Much like tennis skirts, the very similar pleated skirt is making a huge return. Whether that be in bubblegum-pink check or denim, there’s a place for one in your wardrobe. Ideal with a pair of chunky sneakers, the pleated skirt will add that sporty-chic element to your ‘fit. Though, don’t be wearing it over a pair of bootleg jeans. That trend is NOT back (and hopefully never will be). Ashley Tisdale, what were you thinking?

Baguette Bags

So, these little bags have come up in every decade we’ve explored so far, but there’s something about ‘00s styling that just makes sense when it comes to the addition of these tiny, impractical bags. Lindsay Lohan’s little Chanel number is an accessory we definitely want in our wardrobe today.

Baby Tees

Out of all the iconic fashion looks we’ve dragged up from the ‘00s in this article, baby tees are the most prominent of all. Often cropped (perfect for showing off that belly-button piercing) and dressed with graphics of angels or cherries, for the ultimate Y2K wardrobe you can’t be without these. They look PERFECT with those flared jeans or Juicy tracksuit!

Tie-Front Tops

You know during lockdown when every influencer and their dog flocked to a local field and took a load of photos for no good reason apart from boredom? One of the most frequently seen items being worn in these impromptu photo shoots was the tie-front cardigan. We're so happy to support the return of this trend, as seen on the likes of Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears twenty years ago.

Bandanas

Often only seen on very hot holidays, the bandana is making its way back into mainstream styling to help us on those ‘lil-bit-greasy hair days. Paired with the tinted sunnies and chunky sandals, this is the ultimate Y2K look that doesn’t look out of place for summer 2022. The colour co-ordination and mini Jacquemus bag just adds the cherry on top of this; we’re in love. However, was it Elle Woods that said ‘whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed’? No comment.

Jewel-Encrusted Everything

Jennifer Lopez is another of many noughties icons. Dressed here in her very own bedazzled baby tee reading ‘J. Lo’, complete with a sparkling, silver belt, there is plenty of midriff on show making this outfit quintessentially ‘00s. There is no such thing as doing things by halves in this decade. So, if you want a graphic, baby tee as discussed previously, then make sure it is covered in cheap, plastic diamonds. You heard it here first.

Can we also discuss how J.Lo has looped her bejewelled belt around her mic pack? It looks hella uncomfortable, but style over comfort, right?

Have we convinced you that Y2K being back is the best thing that's ever happened in fashion? Of course we have. Everything about this is so pleasing! As soon as you embrace the return of '00s fashion, everything you wear will feel like a nice warm hug full of nostalgia.
