Pool Street Market, a neighborhood store famous for its lobster rolls, has sold out

BIDDEFORD – If adding them up were possible, the number of lobster rolls – as well as Italian, egg, ham, tuna and other sandwiches that Crystal Vachon has made since she bought Pool Street Market would be amazing. Add to that the years she spent working for the previous owner as a teenager and young woman and there would be many, many more.

Vachon, however, hung up his apron at Pool Street Market for the last time. Thursday April 28 was his last day. She sold the property at 77 Pool St. the next day.

“I’m going to take the summer and then decide” what’s next, she told the outlet on Wednesday, April 27, the day before her final visit to the market. Although she had some flexibility and was able to make time to attend sporting events at her children’s school when they were young, she worked many hours, many nights and ends. weeks over the years. There have been many seven-day work weeks.

It was busy, as usual, on a recent day at the store with orders for lobster rolls, and an employee was busy filling an order – putting in ham, tomatoes, green peppers and other Italian sandwich ingredients in half a dozen rolls from Reilly’s Bakery.

Pool Street Market has been the local neighborhood store for years. It sports a range of items – snacks, milk, canned food, pet food and more. It’s also the perfect place to enjoy a generously sized fresh sandwich, prepared on the spot, right before your eyes. While homemade egg salad and other sandwiches are popular at Pool Street Market, one of the most sought after is the lobster roll, which comes in four sizes. Vachon estimated that she used 4,500 pounds of lobster a year to make lobster rolls.


In an interview a year ago, Vachon said she grew up in the neighborhood and used to come to the market with her mother when she was little. When she was 16, she started working there part-time for the then owners, Mike and Loyce Bolduc.

After high school, Vachon worked in insurance, but found she enjoyed the customers and camaraderie at the store, and so with the Bolducs wanting to retire, she first rented Pool Street Market, then the bought shortly after.

“I love the interaction with customers,” Vachon said.

When news of the store’s sale broke, people expressed their best wishes on Pool Street Market’s Facebook page.

“The best lobster roll in the state of Maine……sad to see you go but new adventures are always a godspeed blessing and have fun,” one customer said.

“Perfect example of an amazing, honest, hardworking woman,” another said, in part.


Vachon in a social media post, thanked Reilly’s Bakery, Shields Meats & Produce and Ipswich Shellfish Group – vendors who made deliveries to the store every day.

She also thanked her customers.

“I will miss it and I will miss you,” Vachon said, “regulars, seasonals and those visiting for the first time. I will miss you all… Thank you for all your years of support.
