The City Council of Dénia has given the green light to the conversion of the Portland cement factory in Dénia into a hotel complex and a residence for the elderly.

Approval given by the Natural Environment Directorate on June 9 will see a change in use of the site with parts of the original buildings retained and renovated.

The 21,500 square meter plot located in Santa Paula, near the hermitage, will be further developed to include the hotel and the full residence for the elderly. Approximately 7,500 square meters of the property will be reformed to their original state, with the remainder housing the new structures.

The latter land is subject to a preservation order which requires the owners to keep certain buildings and the chimney of the land.

The owners of the site, bge-2 SL, will invest around 4.5 million euros in the development under the direction of its owner businesswoman Amelia Alfonso Ríos. For her to redevelop the property, approval was needed and given by the Conservator of the Montgó Natural Park.

The intention is to use existing buildings and add new structures only where existing ones are unsafe or unsuitable, with the total area of the development remaining as it is now. Where new buildings are required they will conform to existing units, while the size of the paved area will be reduced and replaced with gardens.

The plan also includes the use of renewable energy sources and the recycling of waste generated on site (some will have to go to recyclers). The design should also ensure that it does not generate light pollution.

The redevelopment of the Portland cement factory in Dénia is good news for the city, as the building has been abandoned for many years. For the town itself, the addition of another hotel and retirement home will add to its already attractive offering for residents and tourists.
