What is the proper dress code for church? ›

Some churches are more casual than others, and some allow you to wear whatever you want on certain days or nights. There really is no set church dress code, but in general, wearing denim should be avoided. Unless your church clearly states that jeans are OK, it's best to avoid wearing them for Sunday services.

Regarding the dress protocol, there are three key days: Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday and Good Friday. For these days, it is important to follow the protocol and show respect. Midi dresses, blouses with special details, long pants and our star item...jackets!

None of our clothing choices matter one little bit to the kingdom of God. Wear what you want to church. But I pray that whether you wear a suit or flip-flops, you won't fall into the trap of believing that what you pull out of your closet is an indicator of your spiritual condition.

You can wear jeans, khakis, or even chinos to church. Just make sure they are wrinkle-free. Clothing that is wrinkled gives you an untidy and unprofessional appearance. In addition to the fact that most men own blue denim pants, they also go well with a well-fitted dress shirt for church.

I would say casual clothes with no rips or holes in them is fine as long as it is not too casual. I've seen young people come to church wearing flops on their bare feet and shorts… swim shorts in some cases.

We're talking lighter trench coats instead of super warm puffers, breezy blanket dresses styled with boots, and playing around with layers that you can easily add on or take off depending on how you feel. Honestly, it's a balancing act but one that you can master.

Can I wear a summer dress to church? ›

For a formal occasion like a church wedding or christening, wear a morning dress, or a short sleeve dress with pumps if there is no dress code. For Sunday mass, you can wear a classy summer outfit like a short sleeve midi dress with slingbacks, or a short sleeve blouse with midi pleated skirt and sandals.

Red or purple are appropriate for Palm Sunday. During Holy Week, purple is used until the church is stripped bare on Maundy Thursday; the church remains stripped bare on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, though in some places black might be used on those days.

For the season of Lent, beginning with Ash Wednesday, purple/violet is common, although black or red are sometimes used. Red (or scarlet) more often appears for Holy Week, beginning with Palm Sunday. During Good Friday, or even as soon as Maundy Thursday, a switch is made to black, or rarely no color.

Many congregations, who celebrate Pentecost Sunday, invite congregants to wear red to worship since red is the liturgical color for this important Sunday in the liturgical year. If your congregation does not do this, consider changing the session question to: “Why is Pentecost important?”

Scripture makes it clear that we should dress in clothes that are respectable and demonstrate self-control. We should not be preoccupied with costly clothes or focusing on gaining attention through fine things. Women should adorn themselves with good works as a result of their faith in the Lord.
