The Busy Mom's Guide to the Best Dresses for Church Under $30 (2024)

Can I just be honest?

Sundays are rough at my house.

My husband is a pastor, and so Sunday mornings are kind of a big day for him.

He basically gets up, gets himself ready, and leaves.

Which is totally fine, except that it leaves me with four kids to get ready and lunch to prepare for after church.

And while I fully intend to have a calm, worshipfulSunday morning, there are way too many mornings that things are WILD.

The kids are running amuck, the dog gets out, and I spill hot ground beef all over my dress trying to move it to the crockpot.

(Yes, I now have some aprons to prevent this.)

All of that to say that I don’t have a ton of time for myself on Sunday mornings.

My hair is often up in a messy bun or braid and eyeliner rarely happens.

I definitely don’t have time to iron or put on anything that takes a lot of time or restricts my movements because I have to go up and down our stairs about 256 times per morning.

But I am the pastor’s wife.

And as much as people may say (and truly believe) that what I wear doesn’t matter, it does. Or at least I think it does.

If I show up in a ripped up pair of jeans and a halter top… no bueno.

And while I totally believe that a person is more than what they wear, I also believe that it is good to dress modestly.

Especially at church.

I still make my kids dress up for church, and modesty is one of the few fights I’m willing to take on with my preteen.

And just to clarify, I absolutely could wear pants to church. I just don’t think pants are as comfortable as dresses. They have buttons and are tight on my waist if I eat too many carbs that week. I don’t need anyone or anything reminding me not to eat bagels.

So all of these dresses are a modest length and cut on me. I’m 5’3″. If you’re tall, these may end up on the short side for you.

And because of how crazy mom life is, shopping in a store is a thing of the past for me.

But y’all.

I’ve found the solution to all of my Sunday morning outfit problems.

Amazon.

They have free shipping and free returns, so there’s very little risk in ordering something. If it doesn’t work, stuff it back in the bag, print a label, and mail it back.

Here are my top picks for dresses to wear to church that flatter every mom figure.

1. Vintage Dress

I like big skirts and I cannot lie.

But seriously. I think 50’s inspired clothing is so cute.

It’s not the most flattering for my mom of four hips, but at this point in my life, I’m past trying to look skinnier than I am.

This dress is made from solid medium weight material, so it has a nice weight to it.

It zips up the back, but the material has elastic in it so there is some stretch. This dress is very comfy and forgiving.

And in case you missed it, this dress HAS POCKETS!!

The description is horrible because it’s written by someone who is not a native English speaker, but the reviews are outstanding.

This dress has over 30 different pattern combinations to choose from and would look super cute with these Tom’s.

2. Long Sleeve Maxi Dress

I also love maxi dresses and skirts.

They are just so flattering on every figure, plus they take zero prep to wear.

Didn’t have time to shave during your eight-minute shower?

It doesn’t matter!

Your legs are covered by soft fabric so no one will know!

I have this dress in teal, and I get tons of compliments every time I wear it.

It’s easily my favorite dress because it is so comfortable and versatile.

It’s easy to dress up or down.

I‘ve added a long necklace and nice shoes and worn it to weddings.

I’ve worn it with sandals for a family dinner at Chili’s.

And in case you didn’t notice, IT HAS POCKETS!!

My pockets are usually filled with bobby pins and trash my three-year-old hands me, but I love having a place to stuff my hands when I’m having a conversation.

I’m an introvert and awkward.

More than once, I’ve accidentally slapped my own face during a conversation because I didn’t know what to do with my hands which only adds to the awkwardness of talking to me.

Pockets are relationship savers for me.

3. Perfect Dress for Boots

Along with being awkward, I am also always cold.

It’s ridiculous.

So I wear boots 9 months out of the year.

Since we live in Texas, this is acceptable fashion wise even though it doesn’t make sense weather-wise.

Plus my husband worked three jobs one winter and bought me an amazing pair of Frye boots for Christmas.

The leather is so soft.

The fit is so comfortable.

The boots are so perfect.

I want to wear them every day with every outfit.

And this dress goes perfectly with my beautiful Frye boots.

It is comfortable and flattering. It comes in several different colors and the material has held up just fine to my feral cats kids.

And it too, has pockets.

If you don’t understand why this is a plus, please read about my awkwardness above.

4. Polka Dot Dress

This cute polka dot dress hits below the knees and comes in several very soft colors.

It also comes in long sleeved as well as short sleeved so if you like it, you can get one for every season.

And as you’ve probably come to expect from my recommendations, this dress has pockets.

If you don’t find pockets to be an amazing asset to your dresses, I’m sorry you’re having to endure this pocket loving diatribe.

I just think they’re so great for moms.

Especially at church.

If I’m carrying my cell phone and Bible and I have to sprint across the sanctuary to grab my wild three-year-old before he smashes the drum kit with a mic stand, I need a place to stash my phone. #priorities

And that is not a made up situation.

It has happened more times than it should.

Church training is not going well with this last kid.

5. Floral Dress with Striped Sleeves

I have this dress in the gray/blue color and it is one of my very favorite dresses.

I love the stripe and floral fabric together!

And the striped sleeves look super cute from behind because they have little floral elbow patches.

Last week, my daughter spilled my entire tiny cup of grape juice all over my lap during the Lord’s Supper.

Since the diaper bag was in the nursery with the toddler, I didn’t have any wipes or napkins.

I used my black cardigan to sop it up while holding back tears because I seriously LOVE this dress.

Y’all.

Once I soaked it all up, you could not even see a spot.

I don’t know if our church’s grape juice is just weak or if this dress has some magical stain repellant, but you cannot see the spot at all.

And for those of you wondering, I handled the spill like a saint.

I did not freak out, and I hugged her immediately because she was very upset about potentially ruining my favorite dress.

Sometimes the social pressure of sitting on the front row is good for my mama heart.

And you shouldn’t have to even ask by now, but yes.

This dress does have pockets.

This dress will look cute with almost any shoes, but I love my Tom’s with it.

6. Short Sleeved Maxi Dress

This dress is super comfy and soft as well, but the stripes give it a unique look.

The top has horizontal stripes and the bottom has vertical stripes which are supposed to make you look taller. That part doesn’t work for me, but it’s fine because the dress is adorable.

And if short sleeves aren’t your thing, there’s a 3/4 length option as well.

And of course, it has pockets.

Are y’all tired of hearing me talk about pockets yet?

Because you have to tell me.

I will never get tired of talking about pockets on dresses.

In conclusion, any one of these six dresses with pockets would look awesome on you next Sunday.

But more important than what you wear is that you go.

So even if you don’t have a super comfy dress with pockets, pick a place to worship with other like-minded believers and go. Make the sacrifice of time and effort to go worship God and learn more about Him.

“And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” – Hebrews 10:25
