Tulsi tea, also called holy basil, is a herb renowned for it’s healing properties.

“The Queen of Herbs” – is the most sacred herb of India. Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), although also known as Holy Basil, is a different plant from the pesto variety of Basil (Ocimum basilicum). Tulsi has been revered in India for over five thousand years, as a healing balm for body, mind and spirit, and is known to bestow an amazing number of health benefits.(Source)

Tulsi is an adaptogen– a substance that helps the body adapt to stress. The most important benefits of tulsi tea is how it helps the body balance stress hormones. Although it has a relaxing quality, tulsi is said to increase energy and stamina.

Tulsi tea benefits are also said to include:

  • boosting the immune system
  • promoting a healthy metabolism
  • supporting healthy thyroid function
  • supporting healthy adrenal function
  • improving sleep

Gelatin is the second superfood ingredient in this healing geleé. It also encourages healthy hormones, specifically by supporting thyroid function and by supporting progesterone synthesis. It provides a potent dose of amino acids proline and glycine for healthy bones and liver function.

Some health benefits of gelatin:

  • It supports the thyroid
  • It supports glutathione production (an antioxidant important for detox)
  • It opposes estrogen and supports progesterone (a good thing because many, many women are estrogen dominant)
  • It promotes a good sleep with an inhibitory effect on neurotransmitters
  • It soothes and heals the GI tract
  • It contains a unique amino acid profile thatcan help reduce stress (read more about the hormone-balancing properties of gelatin here)

I encourage you to use grassfed gelatin, not the Knox gelatin in supermarkets. I buy Vital Proteins Collagen Protein (available here with free shipping on all orders), which is their name for gelatin. It comes from 100% grassfed cows. I’ve talked with the company, and they areraise their cattle on grass for their entire lives and do not give them any hormones or antibiotics.

My experience with Tulsi

I’ve keep a huge jar of brewed Tulsi tea in my fridge for the past two weeks. I bought the tea after researching natural support for thyroid function (I’m hypothyroid) and also adrenal function (my poor little adrenals are shot because I took mega-doses of Prednisone, a corticosteroid, in the past for my colitis). And it was also recommended to me by a reader on Facebook.

I’ve been drinking maybe 1-2 strongly brewed cups a day, either liquid or in these jello bites. It’s only been two weeks, but already I’ve noticed my moods improving! I’m having less “I just can’t handle it!” moments… which is such a relief!

My family (lovingly) jokes about my emotional instability. I know that my inability to handle stress is tied to my health issues, and I know this is something that will resolve as my body heals. Besides the tulsi, the other things that have drastically improved my emotional instability are the GAPS Diet and regular acupuncture.

I purchase this loose tulsi tea for this recipe and for drinking.

Tulsi Geleé for Hormone Healing

  • 3 Tbs. grassfed gelatin, recommended brand available here

  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, whisk together the tulsi tea and gelatin. Let sit for 5 minutes. Then turn the heat on medium and whisk until the gelatin dissolves. Let the mixture cool to room temperature (to preserve the healthy enzymes in the raw honey) then whisk in the honey and the salt.
