Should You Visit Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley?

As you will see below, both sections of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter are split between the two main theme parks of Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley and have different themes: rides, restaurants, and shops. However, if we had to pick one between Hogsmeade vs. Diagon Alley, we would almost always lean towards Hogsmeade Village in Islands of Adventure. The main reason is that Hogsmeade has three Harry Potter rides compared to the one main ride at Diagon Alley, and they also have the best ride in all of Universal Orlando in Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. And you will see, on the flip side, we do believe that Diagon Alley in Universal Studios Florida is best suited for families who might only want to enjoy some Harry Potter food, shops, and hidden easter eggs such as Knockturn Alley.

Why did we pick Hogsmeade:

• Rides– Simply put, no other ride in Orlando can come close to the experience you receive from Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure. This ride is worth a trip to Universal alone!
• Food– Nothing is like walking into and dining in The Three Broomsticks. The Leaky Cauldron (that’s in London), is fantastically themed. But any true Potter-Head has always dreamed of sipping Butterbeer in Hogsmeade at The Three Broomsticks.
• Shopping– Although Diagon Alley won this round individually, we like that the shops are more spread out in Hogsmeade. It gives a better shopping experience in our opinion.
• Overall Experience – Who could turn down the chance to walk into Hogwarts Castle? The fact that there’s a great ride inside just makes it even more fun.

Hogsmeade has a huge advantage over Diagon Alley regarding rides. The reason is that Hogsmeade Village has three main rides compared to one in Diagon Alley. It’s also important to note that both lands share one ride in the Hogwarts Express; however, that ride can only be accessed if you have the Universal Orlando park-to-park ticket and you plan to visit both parks. We would say that when you simply rank all of the Universal Orlando Harry Potter rides, the one ride at Diagon Alley, which is Harry Potter, and the Escape from Gringotts, is the second best ride, right behind Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.

We will always lean towards Hogsmeade being the better choice when Universal has Islands of Adventure open for early park admission. The main reason here is that the average wait time for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure will be around 105 minutes in the afternoon. So many of our clients who purchase multi-day tickets or a vacation packagewill avoid these long waits by arriving early to take advantage of early admission. It’s also important to note that Hagrid’s is also one of the only rides that is not included with the Universal Express pass, which makes it even more important to visit this ride during EPA.

However, I would say that the main Harry Potter restaurants, the Leaky Cauldron and the Three Broomsticks, have very similar dining options, and the main reason we prefer Diagon Alley is that it is typically the least crowded of the two. This is especially true if you plan to take advantage of Early Park Admission in the morning.

These include being able to exchange money for wizarding money at Gringotts Exchange or shopping for your favorite dark arts merchandise within Knockturn Alley.
